Question

Q. Two projectile are thrown with different velocities and at different angles so as to cover the same max. height. Show that the sum of the times taken by each to reach the highest point is equal to the total time taken by either of the projectiles.

Solution

Dear Student,

Let time taken by 1st and 2nd projectile be t1 & t2 for covering their respective maximum hieghts, h1 & h2 .Let initial velocities of 1st and 2nd projectile be v & u and θ & ϕ be the angles of projection respectively. ThenAccording to the question :h1 = h2v2sin2θ2g=u2sin2ϕ2gv2sin2θ=u2sin2ϕvsinθ=usinϕ (1)Also,t1 + t2=vsinθg+usinϕg using (1) here, we get :t1 + t2=2vsinθg=2usinϕgor, t1 + t2=T1=T2Where, T1 & T2 are the total time periods of flight of projectile 1 & 2 respectively.
