Q. What are the different types of manure. Explain briefly.
Please read the complete solution, skip the last points if not needed.
There are three major types of Manure, namely:
i. Green manure
ii. Farmyard manure
iii. Compost manure
Green Manure
This involves the process of buying or ploughing fresh growing plants in their vegetative stage into the soil. The crops suited for green manure include mucuna, sun hemp, peas, centrosema, calapogonium, pueraria and grasses.
Farmyard Manure
This is the combination of animal faeces or dungs, urine and plant products used as beddings for the animals. The animals and plant products are allowed to decompose fully into manure. The faeces of poultry, goat, sheep, cattle, pigs and rabbits are essential for farmyard preparation.
The period of decomposition varies with the type of animal dung used. Before applying the manure, it must be allowed to decompose fully so as to avoid burning the roots of the crops.
Compost Manure
Composting is the term usually applied to the rotting down of plant and animal remains in heaps or pits before the residue is applied to the soil.
Importance
1. It improves the activities of soil organisms like earthworms, termites, bacteria, fungi, etc.
2. Manure improves the structure of the soil.
3. Releases carbondioxide to the atmosphere
4. Aeration within the soil can also be improved.
5. Soil temperature can be regulated
6. The acid – base reaction in the soil can be improved because the manure may be acting as buffer.
7. Erosion can be controlled
8. Water can be conversed inside the soil
9. It assists in regulating the soil Ph.
10. It adds nutrients to the soil
11. It creates room for Fertilizers to work on
12. Increases cation exchange capacity of the soil
13. It is also very cheap to produce.
