This means that plasmids have the capability to divide on their own and produce their copies.
They are not dependent on the main genetic material for their replication. This enables them to produce their copies in isolation of the main genetic material also

​''Main genetic material'' here is the chromosomal DNA present in the bacteria which is the main genetic material in the bacteria. Plasmid is the extrachromosomal DNA which does not require chromosomal DNA for replication and is thus independent.
