Question

Q. Which of the following shows biggest jump in II and III ionization energy :
a)1s^2,2s^2,2p^6,3s^2
b)1s^2,2s^2,2p^6,3s^2,3p^2
c)1s^2,2s^2,2p^6,3s^2,3p^6,4s^2,4p^2
d)1s^2,2s^2

Doubt : After removal of two electrons, option 'a' has the electonic configuration of Neon and option 'd' has the electronic configuration of Helium. Now how to choose between the two options ? Please explain.

Solution

Helium has a structure 1s2. The electron is being removed from the same orbital as in hydrogen's case. It is close to the nucleus and unscreened. The value of the first ionization energy (24.6 eV) of helium is much higher than hydrogen (13.6 eV).
For Neon (1s^2,2s^2,2p^6)
It have some screening and more distance to nucleus so it have less ionisation energy than helium
So the anser is (d)
