Under the tenure of Lord Dallhousie, the Widow Remarriage Act was enacted.

1. Key Provisions for Widow remarriage Act :
To protect the honour of the family,upper caste hindu families disallowed the marriage of widows, even child and adolescent ones, all of whom were expected to live a life of austerity and abnegation. Through this act, legal safeguards against loss of certain forms of inheritance for remarrying a Hindu widow was provided.

2. Under the Act, the widow forsook any inheritance due her from her deceased husband. it legalised marriage of widows and declared issues from such marriages as legitimate. Vidyasagar cited Vedic texts to prove that the Hindu religion sanctioned widow remarriage.
