Solution

The correct option is C
Both 1 and 2
Explanation:

El Niño is an irregularly recurring climate pattern characterized by warmer than usual ocean temperatures in the equatorial Pacific.

Statement 1 is correct: The El Nino effect is triggered when the surface water near the coast of Ecuador and Peru gets warmer than normal. This causes a drop in the pressure gradient. In the normal year, a surface low pressure develops in the region of Australia and Indonesia and high pressure over coastal areas of Peru. This causes pressure gradient and triggers the flow of trade wind. However, due to El Nino, this pressure gradient is disturbed and eventually it ends up bringing less than normal monsoon for India.

Statement 2 is correct: El Nino, characterised by a warming of surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, is associated with lower than normal monsoon rainfall in India. El Nino affects the flow of moisture-bearing winds from the cooler oceans towards India, negatively impact the summer monsoon

Extra Information
El Nino generally occurs at Christmas time. El Nino usually lasts for a few weeks to a few months
