The Himachal Pradesh government has decided to start planting sea buckthorn in the cold desert areas of the state.

Statement 1 is correct: It is a shrub which produces an orange-yellow coloured edible berry. In India, it is found above the tree line in the Himalayan region, generally in dry and cold areas such as the cold deserts of Ladakh and Spiti.

Statement 2 is correct: Sea buckthorn is a Hardy, drought-resistant plant and tolerant to extreme temperatures from – 43º C to + 40º C. It is a soil-binding plant which prevents soil-erosion, checks siltation in rivers and helps preserve floral biodiversity.

Statement 3 is correct: The Sea buckthorn berry, also called the “Wonder berry”, “Leh berry” and “Ladakh gold”, is among the most nutritious of fruits. It is rich in concentration of pro-vitamins A, B2 and C, flavonoids and Omega fatty acids in the berries, which is much higher than other fruits and vegetables.
