Explanation: Almost all craft occupations were also organized into guilds, under a head called “jetthaka/pamukkha”. Each guild had its own heads and followed its own rules with respect to quality and prices in order to regulate their business on the basis of mutual goodwill. These guilds also served as banks and kept public deposits from the public on fixed interest rates. The guilds organised by the merchant communities are called “shreni” and are headed by Shreshthi.
Statement 1 is correct: ‘Shrenis’ were associations of merchants and craftsmen following the same profession or dealing in the same commodity.
Statement 2 is incorrect: The state (King) was responsible only for facilitating the economic activities of the shrenis instead of controlling them. They elected their own heads and framed their own rules regarding prices and quality, to regulate their business on the basis of mutual goodwill.
Statement 3 is correct: They issued coins and seals of their own. Kautilya in his Arthashastra mentions that currencies other than the official ones were also prevalent. There was also provision for the big merchants or merchant guilds to get their coins with their own marks stamped elsewhere than at the royal mint. The merchants used to make payments in karas, with each kara being equal to ten panas. Kara was a monetary unit.
Statement 4 is incorrect: ‘Shrenis’ often made lavish donations to Buddhist and Jain monasteries. Some of the finest Buddhist monuments of the period were the result of their patronage.
