The term suffrage refers to the right to vote in an election. In many western democracies, especially in USA and Britain, women were initially denied the right to vote and contest an election to run for public office. A woman’s opinion was considered irrelevant and their voices were suppressed. To protest against this gross injustice, women formed organisations to fight for their rights. After several years of struggle, they were granted the right to vote and run for public office. The Suffrage Movement was a part of a larger movement for women’s rights across the world.
