In a democracy, ordinary people participate in the process of government mainly through elections. During elections, people exercise their right to vote and elect their representatives. Thus, people participate in the government indirectly through their representatives. However, there are a lot of ways in which people become an integral part of the government. They are:

• Participating in political discussions
• Writing letters to the elected representatives
• Campaigning for a candidate running for elections
• Expressing opinions for or against government laws
• Contesting an election, etc.

Through all these ways, people not only become mere participants, rather they become an integral part of the process of government.
