NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization and is made up of 28 member countries in North America and Europe.

NATO aims to safeguard its members through political and military means.

NATO's headquarters are in Brussels, Belgium.

The genesis of NATO can be traced backed to cold war era. In 1949, the prospect of further Communist expansion prompted the United States and 11 other Western nations to form the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

The Soviet Union and its affiliated Communist nations in Eastern Europe founded a rival alliance, the Warsaw Pact, in 1955.

It is an intergovernmental military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty.

It works on the principle of collective defence i.e. an attack against one ally is considered as an attack against all allies.

Recently, it was supported by its allies against its war on terror.

The NATO countries are: Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States.
