Q35) NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft has made history in a mission to explore Pluto (a dwarf planet).Pluto is a part of:
Kuiper belt
Ans:35)(b)Expl: NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft became the first spacecraft to successfully fly by the dwarf planet Pluto, the last unexplored world in the Solar System. The spacecraft confirmed Pluto’s pride of place as the largest
object in the Kuiper belt. Pluto was demoted to dwarf planet status in August 2006 after the discovery of Eris, of similar size, in the Kuiper belt. Contrary to expectations, the first close-up image revealed that the surface of Pluto was not riddled with any impact craters formed by objects bombarding it. New Horizons’ purpose is to study Pluto, its moons and the Kuiper Belt, performing flybys of the Pluto system and one or more Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs).
The Kuiper belt is a great ring of debris similar to the asteroid belt, but consisting mainly of objects composed primarily of ice. The dwarf planet Pluto is the largest known object in the Kuiper belt.
