Oil Seeds
1. India is the largest producer of oilseeds in the world. Different oil seeds are grown covering approximately 12 per cent of the total cropped area of the country.
2. Main oil-seeds produced in India are groundnut, mustard, coconut, sesamum (til), soyabean, castor seeds, cotton seeds, linseed and sunflower.
3. Most of these are edible and used as cooking mediums. However, some of these are also used as raw material in the production of soap, cosmetics and ointments.
4. Groundnut is a kharif crop and accounts for about half of the major oilseeds produced in the country. Andhra Pradesh is the largest producer of groundnut followed by Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
5. Linseed and mustard (Sarson) are rabi crops. Sesamum is a kharif crop in north and rabi crop in south India. Castor seed is grown both as rabi and kharif crop.
6. Madhya Pradesh is the leading producer of oils (area 22.65%, production 19.90% of India) in country followed by Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh. These five states together tribute two-third of the area and the production seeds in the country.
