Question 1
Compare the use of manure and fertilizers in maintaining soil fertility.
Manure in maintaining soil fertility:
(a) Manures provide a lot of organic matter (humus) to the soil, thereby increasing soil fertility. Humus helps to restore water retention capacity of sandy soil and drainage in clay soil.
(b) These are the sources of organisms like soil friendly bacteria.
Fertilizers in maintaining soil fertility:
(a) Fertilizers also add to soil fertility but for a limited period.
(b) Use of excess fertilizers leads to dryness of the soil and the rate of soil erosion increases.
(c) Continuous use of fertilizers decreases the organic matter in the soil. This reduces the porosity of the soil as a result of which roots of plants do not get sufficient oxygen.
