Question

Question 1
Why do HCl, HNO3, etc., show acidic character in aqueous solutions while solutions of compounds such as alcohol and glucose do not show acidic character?

Open in App
Solution

When HCl or HNO3 is added to water, they dissociate into respective ions as shown below-

HCl (aq)H++Cl(aq)

H++H2O(l)H3O+(aq)

The concentration of H+(aq) or H3O+ ions turns the solution acidic.
But, if alcohol and glucose are added to water, they do not dissociate. Hence, these do not show acidic character.
