If we begin with a single cell, then the number of cells of bacteria after :

30 min = $2=2^1$
1 hour = $4=2^2$
1 hour and 30 min = $8=2^3$
2 hours = $16=2^4$
2 hours and 30 min = $32=2^5$
3 hours = $64=2^6$
4 hours = $2^8$
5 hours = $2^{10}$

12 hours = $2^{24}$
