Question

Question 15 (a)
State the rule to determine the direction of a
(i) magnetic field produced around a straight conductor-carrying current.

Solution

(i) Maxwell's right-hand thumb rule: It states that a current carrying conductor creates a magnetic field around it. The nature of magnetic field around a straight current carrying conductor is like concentric circles having their centre at the axis of the conductor. The direction of these circular magnetic lines is dependent upon the direction of the current. The density of the induced magnetic field is directly proportional to the magnitude of the current.
