The present age of the father is 42 years and that of his son is 14 years. Find the ratio of:

Age of the father to the age of the son, when the son was 12 years old.

When son was 12 years, i.e. 14 - 12 = 2 years ago,

Then, father's age = (42 - 2) = 40 years

And son's age = 12 years [Given]

Therefore, the ratio of their ages when son was 12 years old

= 4012 = 103 = 10:3 [Dividing numerator and denominator by HCF of 40 and 12 i.e. 4]
