Solution

Two biologically important compounds that contain both oxygen and nitrogen:

i) Nucleic acids (DNA and RNA)

  • Nucleic acids are biopolymers, or small biomolecules, essential to all known forms of life.
  • They are composed of monomers, which are nucleotides made of three components- a 5-carbon sugar, a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base.

ii) Proteins

  • Proteins are made up of small building blocks called amino acids present in the form of a chain.
  • Amino acids are organic compounds containing amine (-NH2) and carboxyl (-COOH) functional groups, along with a side chain (R group) specific to each amino acid.
