Question

Question 24

Explain how lightning takes place.

Open in App
Solution

During the development of a thunderstorm, the air currents move in the upward direction while the water droplets move in the downward direction. These movements cause separation of charges. The positive charges collect near the upper edges of the clouds and negative charges collect near the lower edges of the clouds. When the positive and negative charges grow large enough, a giant spark - lightning - occurs between the two charges within the cloud.
