Question 24

Fig. shows a car sticking to an electromagnet. Name the forces acting on the car? Which one of them is larger?

Solution

Magnetic force (in the upward direction) and force of gravity or the weight of the car (downward).

If the car is moving upwards with a constant speed, then according to Newton's first law, the net force on the car is zero. Hence, the magnetic force is equal to the gravitational force.

If the car is moving upwards with increasing speed, then according to Newton's first law, there is a net force in the upward direction. Hence, the magnetic force is larger than the force of gravity.
