Question

Question 3
if both x – 2 and x12 are factors of px2+5x+r, then show that p = r.

Open in App
Solution

Let f(x)=px2+5x+r
Since x – 2 is a factor of f(x), f(2) = 0.
p(2)2+5(2)+r=0
4p+10+r=0 …(i)
Since x12 is a factor of f(x), f(2) = 0.
p(12)2+5(12)+r=0
p×14+52+r=0
p+10+4r=0 ...(ii)
Since x2 and x12 are factors of f(x)=px2+5x+r,
from equations (i) and (ii),
4p+10+r=p+10+4r3p=3r
p=r
