Question 30
Why are lysosomes known as ‘suicide-bags’ of a cell?
Lysosomes are the waste disposal system of the cell. Lysosomes help to keep the cell clean by digesting any foreign material as well as worn-out cell organelles. If in this process of secreting digesting hormones, there occurs any hormonal disturbance and the lysosome has by mistake secreted more digesting enzymes then this excess hormone gets directed towards dissolving the parent cell itself. Thus, lysosomes are also known as the ‘suicide bags’ of a cell.
