Question

Question 36
Compute the difference in masses of 103 moles each of magnesium atoms and magnesium ions.
(Mass of an electron =9.1×1031kg)

Open in App
Solution

103 moles of Mg atoms =103×6.022×1023
=6.022×1026 Mg atoms
103 moles of Mg2+ atoms =103×6.022×1023
=6.022×1026 Mg2+ ions
One Mg2+ Ion is formed from one Mg atom by loss of 2 electrons, As MgMg2++2e
i.e., difference in the mass of 1 Mg atom and 1 Mg2+ ion = mass of 2 electrons
Difference in the mass of 6.022×1026 Mg atoms and Mg2+ ions
=mass of 2×6.022×1026 electrons
=2×6.022×1026×9.1×1031 kg.
(as mass of an electron =9.1×1031 kg).
=109.6004×105 kg=1.096×103 kg=1.096 g
