Distances travelled by Hamid and Akhtar in an hour are 9 km and 12 km. Find the ratio of the speed of Hamid to the speed of Akhtar.

We know that, Speed = $\frac{D i s t a n c e}{T i m e}$

Speed of Hamid = $\frac{9 k m}{1 h}$ = 9 km/h

Speed of Akhtar = $\frac{12 k m}{1 h}$ = 12 km/h

Ratios are used to compare quantities which have same units. In this case, units of speed of Hamid and Akhtar is same i.e. km/h. Hence, we can find the required ratio.

$∴$ Ratio of speed of Hamid to the speed of Akhtar

= $\frac{S p e e d o f H a m i d}{S p e e d o f A k h t a r}$

$\frac{9}{12}$ = $\frac{3}{4}$ = $3 : 4$ [Dividing numerator and denominator by HCF of 9 and 12 i.e. 3]
