Question

Question 5
Half the perimeter of a rectangular garden, whose length is 4 m more than its width, is 36 m. Find the dimensions of the garden.

Open in App
Solution

Let length of rectangle = x m
Width of the rectangle = y m
According to the question,
x - y = 4 ... (i)
x = 4 + y
Also, the perimeter of the rectangle is given by 2(l+b)
2(x+y)
Give, half of this is equal to 36
x+y = 36 ... (ii)
Substituting the value of x in eq. (ii), we get
y + (4 + y) = 36
2y = 36 - 4
2y = 32
y = 16
We know, x - y = 4
x - 16 = 4
x = 20
Therefore, the length and width of the given garden is 20 m and 16 m respectively.
