Given, office opens at = 9 AM
And office closes at = 5 : 30 PM
Total hours of office = 5 : 30 PM - 9 AM = 8 h 30 min
Lunch break = 30 min
Ratio of lunch break to the total period
$= \frac{30 m i n}{8 h 30 m i n}$
= $\frac{30 m i n}{(8 \times 60 + 30) m i n} = \frac{30 m i n}{510 m i n}$ [ $∵$ 1hour = 60min]
= $\frac{1}{17} = 1 : 17$ [on dividing numerator and denominator by 30]

Hence, the ratio of lunch break to the total period in the office is 1 : 17.
