In Fig. (i) and Fig. (ii), find the ratio of the areas of the shaded portion to that of the whole figure.

From fig (i)
Area of the shaded portion (count the shaded squares) = 8 sq units
Area of the whole figure (count the total squares in the figure) = 16 sq units
Ratio of area of the shaded portion to the whole figure

= $\frac{8}{16}$

= $\frac{1}{2}=1:2$ [on dividing numerator and denominator by 8]

From fig (ii)
Area of the shaded portion (count the shaded triangles) = 16 triangles
Area of the whole figure (count the total triangles in the figure) = 32 triangles
Ratio of area of the shaded portion to the whole figure

= $\frac{16}{32}$

= $\frac{1}{2}=1:2$ [on dividing numerator and denominator by 16]
