Question

Question1

Why does the colour of copper sulphate solution change when an iron nail is dipped in it?

Open in App
Solution

Copper sulphate solution (CuSO4) is blue in colour. When an iron nail is placed in it, it displaces copper from its salt solution because iron is more reactive than copper. Also reddish brown deposits of elemental copper are observed on iron nail.
The reaction involved here is:

Fe(s)+CuSO4(aq)FeSO4(aq)+Cu(s)
