Question

Radiation from the Sun reaching Earth (just outside the atmosphere) has an intensity of 1.4 kW/m2. If FR is the force on Earth due to radiation pressure and Fg is the force due to the Sun's gravitational attraction, then select the correct option.

(Assuming that Earth (and its atmosphere) behaves like a flat disk perpendicular to the Sun's rays and that all the incident energy is absorbed)

[Take Rearth=6400 km ,Mearth=5.98×1024 kg,Msun=2×1030 kg,Distance between the centers of Sun and Earth=1.5×108 km]

Solution

The correct option is C Both options (A) and (B)
The radiation pressure produces a force equal to,

FR=pR(πR2earth)=Ic×(πR2earth)

FR=(1.4×103)×[π×(6400×103)2]3×108=6×108 N

The gravitational pull of the Sun on the Earth is,

Fg=GMearthMSund2se

Fg=(6.67×1011)×(5.98×1025)×(2×1030)(1.5×1011)2=3.6×1022 N

Hence, (C) is the correct answers.
