Let the required number be x

Square of $x = x^{2}$

Hence the equation formed $= 5 x^{2} + 8 - \frac{x}{2}$

$\Rightarrow 5 x^{2} + 8 - \frac{x}{2} = 503$

We get $x = 10$ or $x = - 9.9$

Since - 9.9 is not a natural number, the number he thought of is 10.
