Question

Rajesh dropped a soft metal with valency one in water. He observed the formation of bubbles in the mixture. He made the same observation when this metal was added to dilute hydrochloric acid.
Identify the metal.
Suggest how he can identify the gas.
Write a balance chemical equation to show the reaction of this metal with dilute hydrochloric acid.
Name the base formed when the metal was added to water.
Name two metals that will not react with dilute acid.

Solution

Dear student ,
The metal is Na ( Sodium )
The gas formed is Hydrogen ( H2 ) and it is tested by bringing the burning splinter near the mouth of the test tube then ' Pop sound " is produced .
Reaction with Na and Hydrochloric acid ( HCl ) is : 2 Na + 2HCl → 2NaCl + H2
The base formed is 2Na +2 H2O →2 NaOH + H2
The metals which do not react with acid are Copper and Lead .
