The Supreme Court is called a ‘Court of Appeal’. It can change the decision or reduce the sentence passed by any of the lower courts. Appellate Jurisdiction is applicable in both civil and criminal cases. For Civil cases, the High Court usually needs to submit a certificate which declares two conditions: The first is that the case involves a substantial ‘question of law’ of general importance. This is the determination of what the law is and how it should be applied to the facts in the case. Second, when the question should be decided by the Supreme Court.
