In 1879, Germany formed a Dual Alliance with Austria-Hungary. In 1882 Italy joined them and this resulted in a Triple Alliance. In 1907 as a reply to the Triple Alliance, France formed the Triple Entente with Russia and England. They promised to check German expansion. Later Japan joined the Triple Entente whereas Turkey joined the Triple Alliance.
