Let the distance be $x$ km.
Time for onward journey $= \frac{x}{40}$ hr

Time for return journey $= \frac{x}{60}$ hr

Total time $= \frac{x}{40} + \frac{x}{60} = \frac{6 x + 4 x}{240} = \frac{x}{24}$ hr

Average speed $=$ $\frac{T o t a l d i s t a n c e}{T o t a l t i m e}$ $=$ $\frac{2 x}{x} \times 24$ km/hr $= 48$ km/hr
