Solution

In the midst of bringing about development, industrialisation and to satisfy the insatiable greed for more, human beings permanently damaged the environment. Various activities by the humans have resulted in various phenomena like global warming and melting of glaciers. This is causing an overall change in the temperature and climate of the Earth and its environment. Excessive urbanisation and industrialisation have increased deforestation, thereby increasing the level of pollution, which has brought about dramatic changes in the climate. Phenomena like floods, landslides and Tsunami are the result of increasing sea level due to the melting of glaciers owing to global warming.

a. The problem of environmental degradation has emerged as a new form of non-traditional security threat which calls for greater awareness and cooperation among the local community members who can conserve and preserve our environment. We must remember that environmental degradation is a global problem which requires local solution.
b. For example, due to global warming, a sea level rise of 1.5–2.0 meters would flood 20 percent of Bangladesh, inundate most of the Maldives and threaten nearly half the population of Thailand. We may also give an example of the Tsunami that struck the Indian sub-continent in the year 2004.
c. Today, the problem of global warming has become a matter of concern which is changing the climatic conditions, thereby leading to natural disasters. It has resulted in the global rise in temperature by 1 degree, causing intense heat waves.
d. Rising temperature has also lead to the melting of glaciers and ice sheets. This has further increased the chances of hurricanes, floods and storms, thereby causing devastating effects on the mankind and threatening their security. On the other hand, due to this increase in temperature, many regions have become drought-prone areas.
e. We may also give an example of the indiscriminate usage of resources and their accumulation in the hands of few, thereby widening the gap between the rich and the poor and becoming a source of conflict within the communities. Over exploitation of resources have also damaged the environment leading to severe ecological crisis.
f. One more example can be water which has become a source of conflict, as it is a life sustaining resource. Excessive use of water, over exploitation of water resources and unequal distribution of water to different groups are some of the reasons which have resulted in the interstate water disputes these days.
g. Even, the greed for oil by the industrialised nations to meet their domestic consumption has been a source of conflict in the Middle East. The Gulf crisis can be seen as an example in this context.
