The method of winnowing is based on the principle that the lighter particles will be blown away when wind is blown through the mixture.
Take the mixture to an open ground and stand on a raised platform. Put the mixture on a plate or a sheet of paper. Hold the plate or the sheet of paper containing the mixture, at your shoulder height. Tilt it slightly, so that the mixture slides out slowly. Move the plate upwards and downwards in the air, so that the mixture falls to the ground; the dried leaves will scatter out because they are lighter and are carried away by the wind. And the wheat forms a separate heap on the ground. Hence the two components are separated.
