Calcium oxide (X) reacts with water exothermically to produce calcium hydroxide (Y). Calcium hydroxide when exposed to air reacts with the carbon dioxide present in the air forming calcium carbonate (Z). The formation of calcium carbonate is what causes the shiny finish to appear.
