Question

Ratio of heavy water to ordinary water

Open in App
Solution

Heavy water is also water, but it contains a higher proportion of the hydrogen isotope – deuterium. Two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom makes a water molecule. Deuterium is very much the same as that of normal hydrogen, but contains an extra neutron.
The mass of water= (2*1)+16= 18g
The mass of heavy water=(2*2)+16=20g
So the mass ratio is 18/20=9/10
