Solution

Assertion-Reason relation

Cardiac cycle is the contraction (systole) and relaxation (diastole) of four chambers of the heart- two atria and two ventricles.

There are three stages in cardiac cycle:

Joint diastole: Atria and ventricles are in relaxed state and 70% ventricles are filled with blood.

Atrial systole: Remaining 30% of the ventricles are filled with blood upon atrial contraction.

Ventricular systole: Blood is pumped into arteries upon ventricular contraction.

Hence, the given assertion- Each cardiac cycle consists of systole and diastole of both the atria and ventricles is true.

Cardiac output is the amount of blood pumped by the heart per minute.

It is calculated as- Heart rate x Stroke volume.

Athletes being more active physically have higher heart rate and higher stroke volume than ordinary man so as to fulfill their increased oxygen needs. Hence, athletes have a higher cardiac output than ordinary man.

Hence, the given reason- The cardiac output of an ordinary man will be much higher than that of an athlete is false.

Final Answer:

(C) If assertion is true but the reason is false.
