Question

Read the assertion and reason carefully to mark the correct option in question

Assertion: Fine structure of the objects can be observed by Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM).

Reason: Study of living cells cannot be done through TEM, because of high voltage, which is required to operate it, kills the cells.

Solution

Elaboration:

Transmission electron microscope or TEM uses electron beam to focus on the image. Since electron beam have a smaller wavelength, it can create an image with high resolution. Thus fine structure of the objects can be observed by TEM.

The TEM uses high voltage, thus kills living cells. Therefore the living cells cannot be studied using TEM.

Hence, both assertion and reason are true, but reason is not the correct explanation for the assertion.

Final answer: (B) If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.
