The process of partial oxidation of one molecule of glucose is called glycolysis. A common step for both aerobic and anaerobic respiration is glycoysis and it ocurs in the cytoplasm of the cell. This is because the enzymes required for glycolysis is present in the cytoplasm.

Hence, both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion.
