Question

Read the assertion and reason carefully to mark the correct option in question.

Assertion: PCT,DCT and collecting duct helps in the maintenance of pH and ionic balance of blood by the selective secretion of H+ and K+ ions.

Reason: PCT and DCT, both are capable of reabsorbing HCO3 ion.

Solution

Assertion-Reason relation

The process of urine formation occurs in three steps- ultra filtration, reabsorption and secretion.

During ultra filtration, the blood that carries the impurities passes through the filtration membrane resulting in the formation of the glomerular filtrate. It further passes through proximal convoluted tubule, Henle’s loop, distal convoluted tubule and collecting duct.

In order to maintain the ionic and pH balance of blood, reabsorption and secretion of various electrolytes occur during urine formation. The selective secretion of hydrogen and potassium ions occur in the proximal convoluted tubule, distal convoluted tubule and collecting duct.

Hence, the given assertion- “PCT,DCT and collecting duct helps in the maintenance of pH and ionic balance of blood by the selective secretion of H+ and K+ ions” is true.

During urine formation, there occurs reabsorption and secretion of water, electrolytes, nutrients etc. in order to maintain the acid-base balance in the body. Urine is slightly acidic due to secretion of hydrogen ions into filtrate and absorption of bicarbonate ions from the filtrate in proximal convoluted tubule and distal convoluted tubule.

Hence, the given reason- “PCT,DCT, both are capable of reabsorbing HCO3 ion” is true but not the correct explanation of the assertion.

(b) If both assertion and reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.
