a. The relationship between terrorism and war is extremely complex to comprehend and explain. History bears testimony to the fact that the rise of militant organisations and terror outfits has primarily been the result of wars, leading to further wars in an effort to counter the militant activities.
b. We may give example of how the US government trained, armed, funded and supported Osama bin Laden and his followers in Afghanistan during the Cold War. It was during the Soviet invasion on Afghanistan that the US, whose biggest threat was the Soviet Union, started providing logistics and financial assistance to the radical Islamic militants to fight against the Soviets in Afghanistan.
c. The resultant rise of the Mujahideen, who initially rebelled against the Russians and later rose as the Taliban, Al Qaeda and the Muslim Brotherhood, emerged to be one of the most brutal terrorist organisations, leading to a further war against terrorism by its own creator. One of the examples can be the US invasion on Afghanistan.
d. One may also give the example of the Iran-Iraq war where the US rendered support to Saddam Hussein. In the 1980’s, the US offered economic aid and counter-insurgency training and weapons to the Iraqi soldiers. Again, a dictator created by the US, due to the war, later to be eliminated by the US only.
e. A shift in the US policy towards Iraq was evident after the latter attacked Kuwait in 1990.
f. The US, after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Organisation (WTO), invaded Iraq in the name of the operation Iraqi Freedom.
