The sentence in this case is wrong. If we look into the 1st sentence, we can understand that a mention has been made of something which is happening (late). Instead a verb is given in the second sentence (gets) which specifies something which happens or a simple present tense, we are supposed to use the present continuous (also called present progressive). It is a verb tense which is used to show that an ongoing action is happening now, either at the moment of speech or now in a larger sense. The present continuous can also be used to show that an action is going to take place in the near future.
