High yielding varieties of wheat such as Kalyan Sona and Sonalika which were sown in the wheat-growing belt of India, which is Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, led to the massive jump in wheat production.

As a result, production of wheat per unit area increased tremendously. During the period of 1960 to 2000, wheat production increased from 11 million tonnes to 75 million tonnes.

Jaya and Ratna are the high yielding semi-dwarf variety of rice developed from IR 8 (dwarf, high yielding variety) and Taichung Native 1 (Dwarf and resistant to blast) introduced in India. As a result, production of rice per unit area increased from 35 million tonnes to 89.5 million tonnes

India is one of the major countries that grow sugarcane. Sugarcane varieties grown in India mainly belong to two groups

  • Saccharum barberi grown in north India

  • Saccharum officinarum grown in south India

Saccharum barberi was originally grown in north India, but has poor sugar content and yield. Tropical cane grown in south India, Saccharum officinarum has thicker stems, higher sugar content and high yield.
