Solution

The correct option is C A - T, B - T, C - F
Air pollution is defined as any undesirable change in the physical, chemical or biological characteristics of air caused due to the addition of substances known as air pollutants.

Electrostatic precipitators are used to remove air pollutants in the form of particulate matter from the exhaust of thermal power plants. They are one of the most widely used devices that have the ability to remove 99 % of the particulate matter present in the exhaust. Hence statements A and B are true.

Electrostatic precipitator has electrode wires that are maintained at several thousand volts and are negatively charged. It also has many positively charged collection plates. Electrode wires produce a corona (a region of air that undergoes electrical breakdown and becomes conductive) that releases electrons.

Emissions are made to pass through an electrostatic precipitator. The emission contains dust particles which are filtered out by electrostatic precipitator

Electrons from the corona attach to the dust particles and give them a net negative charge. The collecting plates attract the charged dust particles as the velocity of air between the collecting plates is maintained low in order to allow the dust to fall. Clean air from the electrostatic precipitator is let out to a smokestack ((a chimney or funnel for discharging smoke) which is later released into the atmosphere. Therefore, statement C is false.
