The correct option is
B Only B is correct
Lamarckism was proposed by Jean Baptiste de Lamarck. This theory states that individuals not only pass on the characters they received from their parents to offsprings, but also some characters they acquired during their lifetime. This transmission of characters continues and is called inheritance of acquired characters.
Lamarckism was exposed to severe criticism. Few of them are given below:
The tendency to increase in size of the organs overused was proposed by Lamarck. But the statement A is wrong, because many times overuse showed reduction in size of the organs. For example, people constantly busy in reading, writing and using their eyes more than others develop impaired sight instead of good sight.
Inheritance of acquired characters was a key point in Lamarckism. But this is not always true. For example, mutilations and wounds of parents do not appear in the offspring. If a parent becomes lame before producing the offspring, he will not produce a lame offspring. Another example in this regard is about Chinese women. Chinese women use iron shoes to keep their feet short but their children at birth have normal feet instead of small feet. So, statement B is correct and C is wrong.
Development of new organs where the organism feels their need (internal vital force) is a key point in Lamarckism. According to him, environmental conditions affect the structural organization and sometimes it leads to the development of new organs or enlargement of an existing organ. As per critics this is not true. If the development of a new organ or structure depends upon the desire, then man who had a long desire to fly would have developed wings. So, statement D is wrong.
