Assam had a violent past characterised by insurgencies. There were a lot of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh during the 1980s. They consumed the opportunities of the local Assamese people. This naturally agitated the locals who felt ostracised in their own region . A six year agitation ensued starting in 1979. Led by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), the protestors demanded the identification and deportation of all illegal foreigners – predominantly Bangladeshi immigrants.
