Each and every element required by plant can have one or multiple structural and functional roles. For example, calcium is required in the synthesis of cell wall, activation of certain enzynmes as well as regulation of metabolic activities.

If the plants are deficient in one or more of the essential elements they manifest deficiencies by exhibiting certain morphological changes like yellowing of leaves, delay in flowering etc. These are called deficiency symptoms. However, these deficiency symptoms usually vanish once the deficient nutrient element is supplied to the plant.
